If your vacuum cleaner's motor is running smoothly, but the agitator brushroll isn't rolling as it should, you may have a faulty drive belt. Replacing a drive belt is a fairly simple task, so if you’re unsure where to start you’ve come to the right place for advice.
There are three possible causes as to why the brush bar on your DC25 may not be turning.
- Clogged or damaged brush bar
You can check to see if the brush bar is damaged or clogged when you rotate the bar with your hand. It should move freely and the bristle should be intact to perform at its best.
- Defective brush bar motor
On this model there is a separate motor controlling the brush bar, which is located in the cleaner head itself. If this becomes faulty you will need to replace the entire cleaner head assembly, as the motor is not available as a separate spare part.
- Faulty brush bar drive belt
The motor powers the drive belt , therefor it’s very important to always check if the belt is operating correctly.
This simple step by step guide will help you through removing the faulty or damaged drive belt and replace it with a new one.

Step 1 - Safety Advice
Safety First! Please ensure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before starting any repair.
Step 2 - Separating Cleaner Head Assembly
Let's do this…the first thing we need to do is remove the cleaner head assembly from the main body. To do this, simply pull up the release button connecting the main body to the head and pull the cleaner head towards you.
Now that it’s away, we need to open the assembly to access the belt inside. Start by removing the screws on the base of the cleaner head using a Torx head screwdriver along with the screw holding the wheel in place.
Once that is done the two halves of the cleaner head should easily come away.
Step 3 - Replacing Old Drive Belt
With the cleaner head opened you’ll be able to see if there is a problem with the belt. Either the teeth on the belt will be worn away or it will slack or it may have snapped off entirely.
To remove the belt use a flat head screwdriver to lever it off (that’s if your belt is still in one piece, like the one shown in our video).
Now all we need to do is pop the new belt in place and then put the cleaner head back together.
Put the top half back in position, followed by the wheel and cover and then screw everything back altogether. Not forgetting to click the cleaner head back onto the Dyson body.
