Upright Vacuum Cleaners:
- In a simple upright cleaner, the motor drives both the suction fan and a rubber belt to drive the brush roller or agitator.
- The brush roller dislodges dirt and dust in the carpet under the cleaner, whilst the suction fan draws this over the fan and into the dust bag.
- Clean air is drawn over the motor by the cooling fan. This air keeps the motor temperature down and then exits through vents in the top cover.
- Dirt and dust is trapped and settles in the dust bag while the air passes through the twin surfaces of the bag, which act as a filter.
- A mechanism detects the decrease in air pressure caused by blockages in the bag and the vents and warns when the bag is full.
Cylinder Vacuum Cleaners:
- In a cylinder cleaner with a through flow system, the motor directly drives a suction fan, which draws air through the vacuum cleaner.
- Dirt and dust are drawn up from the cleaning head through the hose. Unlike the upright cleaner, the dirty air enters the dust bag first.
- After the air passes through the dust bag, depositing the dirt, it is drawn through a primary filter to catch any escaping dust before reaching the fan.
- The fan blows the air out of the side of the cleaner through a HEPA filter (High Efficiency Particulate Air), this filters out the tiniest particles of dust.
- When vacuuming is complete, the cord can be rewound using the spring-operated cord rewind.
