  • Yes, it only unscrew at the rear. Cooker back plate is easily unscrewed, but to remove it out of the way you need to remove the power wires which are attached by push fit spade connectors - make a sketch first so as to replace them correctly later. To remove the element you need to unscrew the two nuts which hold the element in place - mine were so tight on that only mole grips would budge them! By Anonymous - Wiltshire - 19 March 2010

Hi Admortem, check out this video, I have a feeling you'll find it handy! http://www.espares.co.uk/advice/cookers-and-hobs/a/1/1140/how-to-replace-a-fan-oven-element.html

Answer this question

Hi, I have experience changing fan oven elements from espares for ourselves and friends, but today I looked at my first SMEG which has rear fixings. An engineer changed her fan element a few months ago but now it fails to heat up but the fan works. The element looks as new - no burn holes or blistering. It is a 11 year old Model A2 with 6 gas burners a large electric oven with fan and a small oven to the right. With digital display.

A typical element will measure between 20 and 30 ohms. A faulty element will be considerably higher than this.

Answer this question

My top oven is not heating up to temperature - seems to get to 100 degrees tops. Could it be the element or thermostat? its 8 yrs old.

On Smeg ovens, if the function switch is not also turned to the OFF position (as well as the thermostat), the cooling fan will continue to run, blowing air past the controls.
